Wedding budget: how to celebrate without falling into debt

In Moldova a wedding is often the biggest event in a family's life and one of its largest expenses. How to calculate, set priorities and avoid starting a family with a loan. · 5 min read

Start with the amount, not the guest list

Wedding budgets usually grow because the venue and number of guests are chosen first and the money is counted later. Do it the other way round: decide how much you are ready to spend, counting your own savings and help from parents, and choose the format to fit.

Do not count on gift money to pay for the costs in advance: the amount is hard to predict.

The main expenses

Write down every item with an amount — that shows where you can save.

  • Restaurant and menu — usually the largest part, and it depends directly on the number of guests.
  • Outfits, rings, hair and make-up.
  • Photographer, videographer, music and host.
  • Venue decoration, flowers, cake.
  • Transport, documents, church ceremony.
  • A 10–15% reserve for the unexpected — it is almost always needed.

Where to save without losing anything

The number of guests matters most: every ten people change the restaurant bill noticeably. A wedding off-season or not on a Saturday is often cheaper. Pick two or three things that truly matter to you and invest in them, and economise calmly on the rest.

Track the costs together

Create a separate “Wedding” category and a savings jar for it. Record every advance and deposit — by the wedding day you will know exactly how much is paid and how much remains. If you keep a shared family budget, both partners see the same numbers.
