How to save for a goal: emergency fund, holiday, big purchase
Where to start saving, how big an emergency fund should be, and how to break a large goal into manageable monthly contributions. · 5 min read
First, an emergency fund
Before saving for a holiday or a new phone, it is worth building a reserve for the unexpected: illness, a car breakdown, losing your job. The usual advice is three to six months of essential expenses. If your needs cost 8,000 lei a month, the fund is somewhere between 24,000 and 48,000 lei.
Keep the fund apart from everyday money — in a savings account or a separate savings jar — so you don't spend it by accident. This is not an investment: what matters is that it is available and safe, not the return.
Break the goal into monthly contributions
A large sum is intimidating; a small regular payment is not. Divide the goal by the number of months until you need it. Want a holiday in 10 months that costs 20,000 lei? That is 2,000 lei a month. If the amount is too much, move the date or rethink the budget now rather than at the last minute.
- Write the goal down with an amount and a date — being specific is a strong motivator.
- Put money aside on payday, not “whatever is left”. Usually nothing is left by the end of the month.
- Watch your progress: seeing that you have already saved 40% is far more encouraging than just knowing you are “saving something”.
Several goals at once
Saving for two or three goals in parallel is normal: an emergency fund, a holiday and, say, home repairs. It is convenient to have a separate jar for each and top them up according to plan. That way the money doesn't mix and you won't spend the holiday money on repairs without noticing.
If there isn't enough for everything, set priorities: first the emergency fund (at least a minimal one), then goals with a deadline, then the nice-to-haves.
What if you had to take money out
It happens to everyone. The key is not to pretend it didn't. Record the withdrawal, recalculate the plan and decide how to put the money back: increase contributions for a couple of months or move the goal date. Honest records of withdrawals keep you from fooling yourself.
