How to stop impulse buying
Sales, “last size left”, one-click checkout — how to tell a want from a need and keep your money without strict bans. · 4 min read
Why we buy things we don't need
Shops and apps are designed so that the decision to buy is made quickly: sale timers, “only 2 left”, saved cards and one-click payment. An impulse purchase brings pleasure for minutes while the money is gone for good. The good news: an impulse fades quickly if you give it time.
The 48-hour rule
A simple rule that cuts out most unnecessary purchases.
- If you want something that wasn't in your plans, add it to a wish list and wait two days.
- For bigger purchases wait longer: a week or until the next payday.
- If after 48 hours you are still sure and it fits the budget, buy it with a clear conscience.
- Remove saved cards from online shops: an extra step at checkout gives you time to think.
Count in hours of work
A useful trick is to convert the price into working hours. If you earn 100 lei an hour, trainers for 2,000 lei are 20 hours of your work. Are you ready to work almost three days for them? Sometimes the answer is yes, and that's fine. What matters is that it is a conscious decision.
Leave room for spontaneity
A total ban on unplanned purchases usually ends in a binge. Instead, budget a small amount for treats and spend it guilt-free. When it's gone, wait for next month.
