How to lower your utility bills
Electricity, gas, water and heating are a large part of essential expenses. Simple steps that shrink the bills without losing comfort. · 4 min read
Look at the numbers first
Record every utility bill as a separate transaction — over a year you will see how payments change with the seasons and how much winter heating costs. This helps both to plan the budget for the cold months and to see which measures worked.
Electricity
Small habits make a noticeable difference over a year.
- Replace any remaining incandescent bulbs with LEDs — they use several times less power.
- Unplug appliances or use a power strip with a switch: standby mode uses energy too.
- Run the washing machine and dishwasher full and choose eco programmes.
- Keep the fridge away from the cooker or radiator and check the door seal.
Heating and water
Draught-proofing windows and doors before winter pays for itself in one season. Air rooms briefly and intensively rather than leaving a window ajar for hours. Fit a tap aerator and a water-saving shower head — consumption drops without losing pressure. If you don't have meters yet, installing them usually pays off quickly.
Plan for the winter months in advance
Bills rise in winter, and that is predictable. Put a little aside in a separate savings jar from spring and summer, and December's payments won't hit your budget.
