A big purchase: loan, instalments or save up?

A phone, appliances, home repairs or a car — how to compare the options and see what buying “now” rather than in six months really costs. · 5 min read

Work out the full cost

With a loan or instalments, the price you pay is not the one on the tag. Add up all payments, fees and insurance over the whole term. Sometimes “interest-free instalments” include compulsory insurance or a higher price for the item. Compare the final totals.

When borrowing makes sense

Debt is justified when the purchase is urgent or earns money.

  • You need the item for work or study and it starts paying off right away.
  • Something essential broke — a fridge or washing machine — and you can't wait.
  • The instalments really are interest-free and the monthly payment fits comfortably into the budget.
  • All your loan payments together stay below roughly a third of your income.

When it's better to save

If the purchase is a want rather than an urgent need, saving up is almost always cheaper. While you save, it often turns out you don't need the thing that much any more, or a better and cheaper model appears. Divide the price by the number of months and put that amount into a separate savings jar — the process itself builds discipline.

If you do take a loan

Record the loan with its payment schedule so you can see how much goes on interest and how much principal remains. Set reminders for payment dates and pay early when you can — it cuts the total you overpay.
